Sundered by Ernie Laurence Jr.

Synopsis:

In Ernie Laurence Jr.’s epic fantasy debut Islands of Loar: Sundered, the world of Loar lies shattered from a cataclysmic event over 1,600 years ago, leaving survivors on floating island fragments orbiting a star, sustained by powerful elemental magic amid the vast emptiness of the Void. Three disparate bands of heroes emerge across these scattered lands, contending with monstrous threats, demonic forces, political intrigue, and dark magical powers intent on completing the planet’s utter destruction.

Review

Just a disclaimer here that I got just over a 1/3 of the way through and did not finish reading. So take the review for what you will.

What Sundered tries to be is be an epic fantasy series without drawing me in first. For over my entire reading section I was introduced to character after character without understanding anyone’s place in the world or knowing who the man character(s) were. I did not understand what was going on or what the plot was supposed to hinge on. I see other reviewers also had to re-read sections to figure out what was going on and where they could overlook this, I could not.

This may be normal for everyday fantasy readers but not a lot of the world is explained. I can figure out what elves and orcs are without the story needing to tell me but some of the magic systems or items are lost on a dabbler in the genre. Again, this feels like an attempt to make an epic fantasy series without hooking the audience along the way. I wanted to give it at least a 1/3 of the book to try and get me to care but following a character called Muskrat and without making headway into any sort of plot, I just had to stop for my own benefit. This maybe someone’s fantasy tale, but it is not mine.
