Hidden Fury by Bjorn Hasseler

Synopsis:

When a decapitated body turns up at a Little Library, there’s more than a story to tell. Special Agent Tiffany Watson of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit catches the case when the local PD reaches out for assistance. But all is not as it seems as evidence unbelievably points toward a supernatural culprit.

Review

This is my first encounter with the Systema Paradoxa Series and I like the premises. A mystery involving some type of crypid. Just throw a crypid in there and I’m interested. For Hasseler’s entry volume, a modern-day encounter with Goat-Man – and MURDER!

Tiffany Watson is an FBI profiler who is just – normal. Finally! No childhood trauma that would remove a person from the force in the real world, no man-hating freakouts for no reason, no above-superhuman intellect where she’s smarter than everyone, and an accurate take on what a profiler would do. She’s a very likable character who finds a couple of local officers to tag along with into the investigation of a couple of decapitations and the prime suspect is maybe the fabled Goat-Man.

A quick read and because it is well written an enjoyable read that makes me want to check out the rest of the series by other authors. The lead-up to the conclusion happens a bit quickly and I doubt an FBI profiler is going to have an AR-15 in her vehicle as SOP gear but that’s kind of a nitpick. The conclusion was something I quite enjoyed with maybe one or two issues of why something happened but they are small. The take on the Goat-Man is well done and nice nods to recognizing that Watson is essentially in an X-Files story adds even more realism. I enjoyed my read and would recommend at least this one (and maybe the series) for my friends who enjoy cryptid stories.
