Voltaire was one of the most prolific attackers of the problem of evil during the Enlightenment. Voltaire’s rhetoric, arguments, and yes, even poems against people like Leibniz show this clash with dealing with the claim that evil is necessary for the best of all possible worlds explanation. Voltaire and others like him engaged in mockery of an explanation for evil – but it is not the only explanation for evil Christians have to offer.
